A Legacy of Women’s Wellness: The Story of Blue Canoe

This Women’s History Month, we’re celebrating the stories of women who have forged their own paths, building businesses that reflect their values and a commitment to a better future. Among them is the story of Blue Canoe, a company born from a woman's vision to create clothing that is better for women, their health, and the planet.

Founded in 1994 by Laurie Dunlap, Blue Canoe has a history deeply rooted in women's wellbeing. Long before “organic” became a household term, Dunlap chose to build her company on a foundation of organically grown, plant-based fabrics. This was a conscious decision to reject the chemicals and synthetics prevalent in the fashion industry and to offer women a healthier alternative.

For over 30 years, Blue Canoe has been a quiet pioneer in the sustainable fashion movement. The company’s commitment to women’s health is exemplified in its signature collection of bras. Designed without underwires, harsh elastics, or synthetic materials, these bras prioritize breast health and everyday comfort. It’s a testament to their success that so many women, in search of a healthier option, have found their forever bra with Blue Canoe.

As a woman-owned and operated business, Blue Canoe’s approach to design is informed by the lived experiences of women. The team understands that clothing should not only be beautiful but also functional, comfortable, and confidence-inspiring. This philosophy is woven into every piece they create, from their famously soft loungewear to their versatile everyday basics.

Blue Canoe’s dedication to its values extends beyond its products. By manufacturing all of its clothing in the USA, the company supports local economies and ensures that its products are made under fair labor and environmental standards. This commitment to ethical and sustainable practices has not gone unnoticed. Blue Canoe was recently honored with the Atlas Award by Be The Example, a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable living, for its 35-year history of responsible fashion.

This Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women behind Blue Canoe – the founder who started it all, the women who design and craft the clothing, and the women who wear it every day. Their story is a powerful reminder that when women lead, they can create businesses that not only succeed but also make a meaningful difference in the world.
